In a combined cycle power plant, the heat in the exhaust gas from the gas turbine is not rejected to the atmosphere, but is used to generate steam for a downstream turbine. Combining these two processes with the aid of a steam generator can increase efficiency to 58% or better. Combined cycle power plants are amongst the most environmentally friendly fossil-fueled plants in the world.
