Siemens to deliver medium voltage power supply system for Kuwait International Airport – order volume is EUR 80 million

Erlangen, Germany, January 22, 2008

As part of the expansion of Kuwait International Airport, Siemens Energy has been awarded an order worth EUR 80 million for planning, delivery, installation and commissioning of a medium voltage power supply system. The order also comprises the standby power supply as well as support for the subsequent maintenance of the system and training of the technical personnel responsible for the system. The customer is the airport operator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation in Kuwait. The power supply system is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2010.

Kuwait is currently in the process of expanding its international airport. The plans include construction of a second terminal with capacity for 20 million passengers, a third runway, a new hotel, multi-level car parks as well as connected aircraft parking aprons. Further measures are also planned, including extending of the runways by 500 meters to accommodate the new Airbus A 380.

“Airports have especially demanding requirements for the reliability and availability of their power supply. Thanks to our extensive expertise in the industry, combined with innovative technology for medium voltage and emergency power supply, we can design and produce exactly the right solution for our clients,” said Ralf Christian, CEO of the Power Distribution Division in the Siemens Energy Sector.

Siemens is delivering the complete medium voltage power supply technology, which is designed to ensure a safe and reliable power supply for equipment for the entire airport. The order includes 176 gas-insulated 11-kV medium voltage switchbays, 49 cast-resin transformers, the complete medium-voltage and low-voltage cable system and the expansion of the system for supervision and data acquisition (Scada), installed in 23 new substations. Further more Siemens is constructing a building with three 4.5-MW diesel generators specially for the airport’s standby power supply system in order to guarantee a 24/7 power supply for the runway lighting, the instrument landing system or the air traffic control equipment.

The Siemens Energy Sector is the world’s leading supplier of a complete spectrum of products, services and solutions for the generation, transmission and distribution of power and for the extraction, conversion and transport of oil and gas.
