Siemens expands power supply network of Dubai

Order worth of two turnkey transformer substations about EUR 200 million

Erlangen, Germany, November 27, 2008

Siemens Energy has been awarded an order valued at about EUR 200 million by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) as part of the further expansion of the power supply network of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The order comprises delivery of two turnkey transformer substations for the 400 kV/132 kV voltage levels, which include gas-insulated, high voltage switchgear systems with a total of 24 switchbays for 400 kV and 59 switchbays for 132 kV, eight 500-MVA power transformers, and protection and control equipment. The power supply project is scheduled for completion within 26 months.

The transformer substations that Siemens is building in the city of Dubai will supply electric power to new infrastructure projects. “With our global expertise and innovative and efficient power supply solutions, we contribute to advance the most ambitious projects in Dubai,” said Udo Niehage, CEO of the Power Transmission Division in Siemens Energy Sector. The steady increase in population and thriving trade, industry and tourism are currently driving up power consumption in the United Arab Emirates at an annual rate of about ten percent – more than double the average global growth rate.

This order is another milestone in Siemens Energy’s successful business in the Gulf region. Over the past few years, Dubai alone has placed orders for 50 turnkey transformer substations. Just recently the infrastructure developer Tatweer commissioned Siemens with delivery of four turnkey high voltage substations for the planned Dubailand theme park. This order had a total volume of about EUR 95 million. Siemens Energy is involved in practically all major projects in the Emirate with its power supply solutions, including the Burj Dubai skyscraper, the Dubai Waterfront coastal development project and the three artificial Palm Islands.
