The SST-050 is available with external and with integral gearbox. For the conventional design with external gearbox, the gearbox is located between the bearings. The design of the SST-050 with integral gearbox is exceptionally compact, and approximately half the size of the conventional design. With this overhung design, the turbine, gearing and oil reservoir are all combined in a single unit, with the turbine wheel mounted on one end of the shaft.
The casing of the SST-050 is vertically split to allow easy removal of exhaust casing without disturbing the exhaust piping. This enables easy inspection of the turbine wheel, the stationary blades and even the carbon rings for shaft sealing. The thermal load on the steam conducting parts has no influence on bearings, gear or alignment with the drive machine. For this reason, a fast start-up from cold condition is possible.
The steam casing is completely isolated from the main mechanical parts of the turbine, substantially reducing the problems associated with differential thermal expansions. The simple axial split casing for the bearing housing enables inspection and maintenance without disturbing the steam casing.
Due to the slimline construction and light weight there is no need for a separate foundation. The SST-050 can be mounted directly on the ground since the inlet flange is oriented upwards and the exhaust is oriented sideways or upward.
